Impact of Climate Change on Ghana's Agrifood System

Ghana is highly vulnerable to climate change and disaster risks. A sizable regional presence resides along the banks of the Volta River, covering the Volta Region, Eastern Region, Bono Region, Oti Region, Savanna Region and Northern Region. Additionally, a large portion resides along the coastal belt spanning Keta in the Volta Region to Axim in the Western Region. This makes the country vulnerable to floods, storms, and droughts.

The 2019 World Risk Index ranks Ghana as the 50th most disaster-prone country among 172 countries. The agrifood sector is particularly prone to the impacts of climate variability resulting in lower cropping yields, water and land-use stress. This is potentially creating food insecurity, lowering rural household incomes and creating employment instability. Climate change also affects infrastructure-roads, irrigation facilities, and water pipes through flood damages. The disruption of infrastructure connectivity significantly impacts the overall economy due to the loss of market access of agriculture products.

SyeComp’s bundled climate information, digital finance and market linkage services provide a solid opportunity to help value chain stakeholders adapt to climate image. It also provides avenue for climate mitigation and backbone for digital service delivery mechanisms in support of national frameworks for climate services.
