Hyperlocal Weather Data Increases Productivity of Farmers in Ghana

Weather variability due to climate change is impacting rain-fed agriculture around the world. Smart technical approaches to help farmers cope with this situation leveraging on adaptive digital innovations is needed today.

According to the Head of Farmer Credit at Syecomp, Larry Komi Marcus, weather predictability is a key asset/tool for most smallholder farmers since they rely on climatic conditions for farming activities. A yam producer in Kpandai (Ghana) once puts it simply…….”we live at the mercy of the weather”. With Syecomp’s localised weather forecast information service, delivered to farmers on their cellphones, they are able to plan their farming activities better. Over 20,000 village place points have been GPS-mapped across Ghana to provide accurate and seamless hyperlocal climate information. The service also covers Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, et al.
